What is FUFB?
FUFB (Fix Up FaceBook) is a free tool to reclaim your privacy. Why should I care?
There is nothing wrong with public dialogue, however not every conversation or debate needs to leave a permanent, searchable, infinitely reproducible record. Privacy facilitates freedom of speech, particularly in countries where free speech is not constitutionally protected. With FUFB you can speak freely now and avoid chilling effects later.
IM chat logs attributed to Mark Zuckerberg seem to indicate that he has a fairly cavalier attitude toward privacy, and that the stated goal of Facebook is to acquire as much personal information as possible and sell it as demographics to the highest bidder. What's worse is that your data is Facebook's biggest asset. Should Facebook fold someday, where does your data go? Will the privacy controls remain intact, or will Facebook's former users have to fight tooth and nail to put the genie back in the bottle?Sure, Facebook doesn't look like they are folding anytime soon, but what about the interests of your employer? Your school principal? Would you give up your facebook account to get a job? To keep one? Maybe to start a career in politics? Do you think your Facebook history would help you keep your freedom, or could someone find something incriminating to use against you? Or perhaps you or someone you know lives under an autocratic regime that monitors Facebook for examples of sedition?
Astoundingly, every one of the 1,000+ Facebook engineering and operations employees have access to the entire production database after they complete a corporate "boot camp". If you think your privacy settings matter, don't become famous. "Safeguards are in place", but one must ask: Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?
Are you willing to take that bet?
